Surdas Biography

There is no official record of Sant Surdas Ji’s birth. Some scholars and Sants say he was born around 1478 AD in Runkata, a village near Mathura-Agra. However, some other schoolers claim he was born in Sihi village in the Faridabad district of Haryana into a poor Brahmin family. Surdas was born blind and endured neglect and abuse from his three brothers due to his disability. Despite his most difficult time, Sant Surdas rose to fame as Sant Surdas.

Ramdas Saraswat was the name of Surdas ji’s father, and his mother’s was Jamunadas. His childhood name was Surdhwaj. But we all know him as Surdas. Surdhwaj was the fourth fourth child of his parents.

During that difficult time because of his blindness, when he asked his father to teach him like his three elder brothers, he was rejected by his father. His mother also rejected him because she was upset that he was trying to get sympathy for his blindness.

Surdas Ji’s Meeting With His Guru Shri Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya ji

At the early age of seven, he left his house, built a tinny wooden house outside to sleep in the cold nights, and relocated there due to the anger from his family. As time passes, he decided to go to Mathura’s Gau Ghat a few years later.

His life took a U-Turn and he met Shri Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya ji Maharaj in Shri Vrindavan Dham, who made Surdas Ji his disciple. Shri Vallabhacharya ji belonged to the Pushtimarga sect. After receiving his initiation from his Guru ji, Letter on Surdas ji began writing and singing poems about Lord Krishna. His poetry is so valuable and divine that reading it will lead you believe that the speaker cannot have been born blind. He wrote thousands of dohas (lyrics) for Lord Shri Krishna.

After getting his teachings from his guru, in order to effect spiritual change in the community, Vallabhacharya Ji gave Surdas Ji the duty of conducting kirtan rituals at the shrine of Shri Nathji.

Work of Sant Surdas (Surdas Ki Rachnaye)

It is reported that Sant Surdas ji wrote over 1.25 lakh verses. Unfortunately, as the time passes there are only around 7 to 10 thousands lyrics presently of Shri Krishna available. Surdas ji wrote over twenty-five manuscripts and credited for it, only three of them are available presently.

Texts of Surdas Ji

  • SURSAGAR – Srimad Bhagwat served as the inspiration for this book’s writing. Although there are reportedly 1.25 lakh poems in this book, only 7,000 of them have been proven to exist as of now. Sant Surdas ji has described the biography of Shri Lord Krishna from infancy to youth in this book.
  • SURSAWALI – The soul of Sursagar is Sursaravali. 1107 divine verses are available. The composition was completed in 1602 Vikram Samvat.
  • SAHITYA LEHARI – This holy book contains 118 verses in tiny form. This book contains some descriptions of the Mahabharata in addition to the account of Lord Krishna’s pastimes. These have discussed heroines, adornment, and rasa. This holy masterpiece was written during Vikrami Samvat in 1607.

Death Of Surdas

Sant Surdas ji was around 105 years old when he left his body in 1583 AD. Surdas ji’s remain Ashes was interred in Govardhan, a sacred and holy site close to Vrindavan, following his passing.
